Description: Celebrate a Century of Women at
the Law School by attending the Breckenridge Dinner.
The dinner is named in honor of Sophonisba Breckinridge, '04,
first woman graduate of the Law School. Ms. Breckinridge was a
noted social worker, educator, and social activist. She earned
a Ph.D. in political science and economics from the University
of Chicago in 1901, and her law degree from the University of
Chicago in 1904.
Ms. Breckinridge became interested in social work in 1905 after
meeting Hull House founder Jane Addams. She joined the faculty
of the University of Chicago and helped develop the Chicago School
of Civics and Philanthropy for the education of social workers.
She served as Dean from 1908 to1920 and remained at the University
as a contributing, revered professor until her retirement in 1942.
